The new Musical.ly is TikTok. Many are now exposed to living their everyday lives with TikTok, the new way of social interaction. For those who don’t know what TikTok is, many may recognize it for its addicting catchphrases. One of the best-known phrases is ‘Renegade, Renegade, Renegade’.

One main benefit of this viral app would be allowing students to relieve their stress. Many students need to find a release when they are too stressed. Other than TikTok being an escape, many use it just for fun to resolve the boredom that comes with everyday life. This is one of the many resources used today for many reasons, even for the greater good such as getting life hacks. Many students don’t recommend to try life hacks because they are a waste of time. “Don’t trust any of the DIY’s on TikTok,”  junior and Varsity Cheer Captain, Michelle Lopez said.

TikTok may be beneficial for those who know how to use their time wisely. However, this may not be the case for many, especially for those overly stressed high school students. Some may not know how to manage their time and may be stuck on TikTok rather than doing their homework. This may be a barrier to some students’ education.

Statistics show that the average person spends about 45 minutes a day on TikTok. This may not be the honest truth for everyone. “You can just get on it, and say I’ll be on TikTok for 30 minutes, and then I’ll start my homework….the next thing you know it’s been three hours. You haven’t done any of your homework,” Varsity Cheer Captain and a junior, Nayvelin Zambada said.

“At first you think the videos are dumb, but then you get tempted to want to start doing them,” Nayely Solis, a junior, said. Many students also believe the same thing.

The Varsity cheer squad was among the first to start using the app on campus. They would be seen around campus before and after Friday night lights recording their infamous TikToks. “It was just something that everyone enjoyed as a team, and it was a way of bonding. We were all like ‘OMG these videos are so stupid, let’s make videos too,’” said Lopez. TikTok is not just a source of entertainment but a form of gathering and friendships as shown by the cheer team.
