Behind the Wolfpack football team there is a tiny hero who has an important role. The tiny hero is the sophomore, Cristina Magna. She strives to be involved in the school, is dedicated and passionate. Therefore, she thought that being a football manager would be the best fit. This fall of 2023 football season is Magana’s first official year as the football manager, and her being so attentive has lit a spark of interest for sport medicine. “There’s no better sport to be involved in, in the ways you can be involved with football,” Magana said.
Magana may not be making perfect passes on the field or tackling the opposing team, but she contributes in immeasurable ways. She has various responsibilities, “She always gives us water. She is there when we need her assistance. She always tapes me up before games & I find that very impactful. I’m very grateful to her,” Fernando Orozco, a senior on the football team, said.
From the very beginning, Magana approached her role with dedication and passion. Some of her main responsibilities are to keep up with equipment, organization and being generally available for the needs of the players and coaches. She is the go-to person for anything anyone needs. “Anytime I ask her to do something, she does it in a heartbeat. No matter what she’s doing, she gets someone else to cover for her, then she’ll go do whatever someone else needs,” said Jacob Vera, one of the assistant football coaches. But what sets her apart is her ability to connect to the players on the team. They all collectively agree that Magana has made their practices much easier and her organizational skills better prepare them for their games.
But it isn’t just coaches and players that admire Magana. The team moms, a supportive group, grew to love her. “ I would tell her to keep it up because what she’s doing now is a reflection of who she is going to become and she’s very responsible. She’s very personable and to me those are traits that are going to make her go a long way. She just needs to keep doing what she’s doing because she’s going to go very far,” Corretta, a returning mom to the football team, shared. The moms sit and gather in the stands, to watch their children play and they know that Magana is keeping their children hydrated and taken care of.
Announcer Nunez witnessed first hand all the hard work and dedication that Magana puts into every game. Nunez has been the announcer for many years and has seen many managers come and go, but greatly emphasizes Cristina’s impact during games. “ If she wasn’t there, I think the team would feel it. If she wasn’t there, I think the team would feel a little bit of frustration as far as water and you know they need a lot of help when it comes to putting their equipment out there. And I think she relieves a lot of stress for the coaches,” Nunez said. He is impressed by Magana’s ability to relieve stress and also handle it very well. Players, coaches and parents describe her as the glue of the team. “Without Cristina there’d be no structure,” Jacob Vera said.
