As basketball season has started, JV boys basketball, Jose Gonzalez, shooting guard on JV boys basketball, was chosen as player of the month. “The work and effort he’s putting in [and] the leadership on the court and you can just tell he’s actually getting better by the day,“ coach Delgado said.
Many of his teammates believe he deserves this since he has worked hard for it. “I always see him on the blacktop and outside of school putting in extra work so I think he deserves it,” Matthew Crist, a sophomore, said. Gonzales himself has acknowledged how far he’s come. “I believe I do deserve it,” Jose Gonzalez, a sophomore, said, “last year I didn’t really do my fullest potential and this year I’m really trying my hardest.”
Because of this accomplishment, many of the players believe he’ll help with motivation and keep on working hard. “He’ll probably also tell us that if he can do it, so can we,” Crist said, “He’s going to continue to put in the extra work and help [motivate us as well].” Another teammate, Germyn Chavarria, a sophomore, said, “He keeps a positive mindset [and] since some players may look up to him, if he’s doing good, he’ll [influence the team for the same].”
In the same way Gonzalez is player of the month for JV, David Aguirre is player of the month for Varsity boys basketball. Coach Delgado emphasizes the leadership skills Aguirre shows for the team. “Leadership. As far as getting the team together,” Delgado said. Many of the players have expressed their support for Aguirre and his success. “I think David has really worked for it,” Enrique Barajas, a senior, said, “I mean he’s obviously a star player on the team.”
Others have been able to express how helpful Aguirre is. “He deserves it because he’s always helping us in our team and he’s our big scorer,” Oscar Escobar, a sophomore, said. Many also believe he deserves this because of his skills. “Honestly I think he deserves it, you know, he’s one of the best scorers on our team. He carries us most of the time, he’s also a big help in the team effort,” Diego Navarro, a senior, said. The players believe Aguirre will be able to motivate them into becoming better players. “He hustles a lot, and motivates us to be better,” Escobar said.
