Freshman Colette Martinez is a first year wrestler who started her journey this season. She came into this season fresh from football prior to trying out for wrestling. Martinez went from being number 56, center in football to wrestling for the 155’s weight class.
Last weekend was the CIF wrestling tournament, the team did amazing and got a total of 13 students who qualified and five who placed! Colette secured the 5th place spot for CIF and got 2nd place at regionals the weekend prior. Her goal for starting this sport was to improve her football performance. This advice was given from her football coach
The day she got a feel for the mat, she enjoyed the environment and people. The environment was “a nice experience,” because,”We had a close kind of family with our teammates; we’d spend hours on end on Saturdays talking to each other and eating together like a family.” she states. Compared to football, Colette shares that their mindset was more business and focused on winning constantly.
Throughout times of hardship and rough practices her mind was purely dedicated to continuing to improve. What truly compelled her to keep going with this was the fact that she knew all her hard work and endurance would pay off. She knew this is what she needed to advance and improve. All asistaints and coaches led her to improve.
Colette Martinez ended up placing 5th place for CIF, she feels that as a freshman and especially all her hard work/training; it all paid off for the better. Now looking forward to her next season,” I see what I’ve accomplished and I see what I can do next year to improve and get better results,” she said. Along with working towards getting to her end goal in wrestling which is to qualify and place high in Nationals. Martinez is now at the start of football practices as her season is restarting. She wants to continue to have these back to back sports as both wrestling and football are passions of hers.
