Students dancing throughout the year
Dancers from six classes performed twenty-two dances for the two-day MACES dance show on May twenty-second and twenty-third. The dances were themed around some contemporary songs and multicultural folk dances. Students have been working on their dances since winter break.
Ms. Bhavika, the dance teacher and director of the show, said that the second semester is “always the biggest thing to look forward to. It’s fun and exciting and you never know what you’ll end up with. It’s always a journey helping students get their ideas on stage.” She supports students’ growth. She said,”I like to be fully aware of what’s about to be on stage. The goal is to surprise the audience and not the cast members.” She also said that she gets nervous but not for the same reasons. “It revolves if I do enough.”
Kaylee Sanchez, a junior in the third level of dance performing for the second period performed a lyrical dance, mix, and solo. Her feelings for the second dance show are usually anxious but she said it also feels fun. “I get very nervous especially when I go out on my own, but Ms.Bhavika says everything will be alright.” But she said she’s ready to perform. “The second dance show is my favorite because of the costumes, and we have a bigger show.”
Christopher Banales, a senior who is in the third level of dance performed for the fourth period. He said that for this show he felt rushed because of the schedule and because of AP testing “but it came together”. He feels nervous when performing because he introduces his dance and it never gets easier. “You hear the crowd but you feel satisfied in the end.” He said that he has mixed feelings because “It’s just another dance, but it’s also the last one. It clears the schedule, but I’m never going to see my peers again. It’s bittersweet.”
Jade Mendez, a senior, who is in the first level of dance performed for the third period and will perform a lyrical and Polynesian dance. She said, “I think that I’m ready to perform.” She feels anxious. “I’m gonna mess up but I’m dense.” She feels like her whole class is prepared. “I love it; it is such a stress reliever” are her thoughts on dance.
The second dance show is the biggest and is usually the student’s favorite one to perform because of the costumes and dances. A common emotion that most students have when performing is feeling nervous but excited. They work hard to give people a good show and memorable show
