College application deadlines are rapidly approaching: UC and CSU deadlines are set for December 2, and the Common App regular decision is due January 1. As college seasons loom over us, students at MACES are encouraged to begin their application journey promptly.
Antonio Guereca, a counseling assistant at the college center and a graduate student at Loyola Marymount University, emphasizes the importance of a college education. “With the proper resources, you can really expand those opportunities… it opens up a gateway for you to figure out what you want to do in life,” Guereca said. He believes college can expose students to various career paths.
For those unsure where to start, Guereca recommends, “… ripping off the bandaid and creating those accounts,” because “that’s where agency becomes important.” He emphasizes that a great starting point is to explore personal interests: “If you like sports, maybe in sports medicine; if you enjoy working in a doctor’s office, consider biology,” Guereca suggests.
To assist students, Guereca has taken over the college ambassador program, which provides peer support. “It’s more powerful to hear it from a friend… who better understands your needs than your peers?” This initiative helps students feel more comfortable seeking advice from those with similar experiences.
As the application season progresses, students are reminded to seek assistance at the college center, where Ms. Ostos, Ms. Sanchez, Mr. Guereca, and Mr. Garcia are available to provide support and ensure every student has a solid plan after MACES.
