The Interact Club at MACES is dedicated to community service, following the motto “service above self.” “It’s a club where you put others before yourself,” sophomore member Yaretzi Alvarez said. “You gain skills and learn different perspectives,” added Julia Andrade, a sophomore Interact member.
On December 4, the club hosted a holiday gift-wrapping event in the Parent Center, preparing gifts for children in need. This annual event benefits students from Vernon Elementary, Bandini Elementary, and children in Mexico. Members wrapped toys like Hello Kitty stuffed animals, coloring books, toy cars, and bags filled with candy. “We’re helping those who are less fortunate,” said Erica Moya, a sophomore Interact Club member.
Pedro Velez, a member since his freshman year and a Social Media Manager for Interact, also shared his enthusiasm for the event. “I didn’t even know we were wrapping candy too, but it’s a fun surprise. It’s all about bringing smiles to kids who really need it,” Velez said.
He also talked about why he recommends Interact: “Anyone willing to serve can learn a lot while giving back to the community.” He highlighted the club’s connection to the Rotary Club, which helps make these events possible. “Cottom’s connection with Rotary really helps us,” Velez said.
Jim Boltinghouse, Director of Vocational Service at the Rio Hondo Vernon Rotary Club, emphasized the long-standing partnership between Interact and the Rotary Club. “I’ve been in Rotary now for 29 years,” Boltinghouse said. He explained how the project, which provides toys and gifts to local and international communities, continues to thrive: “We’ve been doing this for years, giving back to our community locally and internationally. We want to make sure the children get these gifts in time for the holidays,” Boltinghouse said.
