After 16 years of producing beats, writing lyrics, and performing for his large crowd of fans. Abel Tesfaye has decided to release one last album under the name “The Weeknd,” he will continue to release music under his legal name. The album has been named “Hurry up Tomorrow,” and was released on January 31, 2025. This name was chosen to show that he can’t wait for the future to arrive so he can keep making music, according to The Daily Californian.
In this album, he created 22 songs collaborating with various artists, including Anitta, a Brazilian songwriter and dancer, who appeared on the early release “São Paulo.” Other featured artists include Justice on “Wake Me Up,” Travis Scott, Florence + The Machine on “Reflections Laughing,” Future on “Enjoy the Show,” Playboi Carti on another early release, “Timeless,” Giorgio Moroder on “Big Sleep,” and Lana Del Rey on “The Abyss.”
The album starts off to a strong start using a sample from Michael Jackson’s hit song “Thriller” and sets a dark and dancey tone creating the song “Wake me up.” It then shifts over to a very energetic song that includes a lot of bass keyboard and lyrics that highlight the ache of regrets and that no matter how much fame and money you have it can’t erase anything in the past creating the song “Cry for me.”
The next song is a transition called “I Can’t Sing,” this goes back to the time in 2022 when he was performing in Los Angeles and he lost his voice while performing. This leads into “São Paulo feat. Anitta.” It begins at a very fast tempo and takes a lot of inspiration from other Brazilian funk songs. It then shifts to Until We’re Skin & Bones another small transition song that sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. “Baptized in Fear” then plays with The Weeknd explaining how difficult it is to live as The Weeknd and tries to commit suicide as he says Water in my lungs vision blurry; this creates a very dark and sad background to this song.
Students at MACES shared their opinions on the album and its overall quality. “A great album with great lyrics that show his talent of vocals and beat but also portrays a powerful message,” Benjamin Melendez, a freshman at MACES said. “It’s like if Thriller by Michael Jackson took LSD and went to a rave and that whole experience was this album with a lot of EDM & Keyboard, super good.” Patricia Guevara, a senior at MACES said. A lot of different students had their opinions about this album, “I just think that it sounds like all of his other albums,” Alexa Godoy, a senior at MACES said.
