This season for the Wolfpack Varsity Boys Basketball team has not gone as expected. Last season, they had eight wins and 20 losses and barely missed the playoffs after losing in the play-in.
There was hope of repeated success with a few more wins as most of the team was returning. At the moment, they stand at a record of zero wins and fifteen losses, with a 17-game losing streak going back to last season.
This is their lowest win total since the 2017-18 season where the Wolfpack had zero wins and twenty [losses]. “They have been disappointing for sure this season. I felt confident about the team going into the season. It’s demoralizing, personally, to see the team struggle this much,” Aren Campos, a junior, said. Although a few losing streaks throughout the season are normal, this large of a losing streak is cause for concern. The last time the Wolfpack had a season with zero wins, the team was composed of mostly freshmen and sophomores as the school had just opened.
They came close to a win on January 27 against Torres. Against Torres, the game came down to two possessions before turnovers and an inability to score in the clutch sealed the win for Sotomayor. David Aguirre, a senior, reflected on the close game against Torres. “We were down but had made it a two-possession game, but then we couldn’t score. We just let it slip away from us and didn’t finish the job.”
The last time the Wolfpack Boys Basketball team won a playoff game was February 19, 2022. Despite how the season has gone so far, the Wolfpack continues to put work in every day to try to find a way out of their recent losing ways.
“Last year we had bigger players on the team. This year we had new players who had different builds, so we had to switch the defense up mid-season. It’s been like learning an entirely different defense.” Domenic Angulo, a junior, said.
“We’ve been trying to practice so many new plays. Some of the stuff that we’ve been doing in-game has not worked. We’ve been practicing, searching for a way to bounce back this season,” Angulo said.
Although the season hasn’t gone as planned, the players continue to support each other with hopes for the future. “We push each other as teammates, we don’t put each other down. We communicate, if one of us is going through something or if one of us is feeling not as confident we have each other’s back. I feel there is potential from the JV team.
They’ve been playing some good basketball this season, showing improvement every game, ” Michael Andrade, a junior, said. There is hope for improvement next season as the Wolfpack should have a more favorable schedule as well with most of the roster returning. If the team plays to their potential next year, a playoff berth could be in reach.
