Senior Emily Ruiz, captain of the cheer team at MACES, has been named Athlete of the Month for her leadership, dedication, and exceptional performance throughout the season.
“My biggest achievement this season was working with the competitive cheer team to win 2nd place at championships,” says Ruiz, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and perseverance in reaching this milestone.
Ruiz’s motivation comes from both her love for the sport and her awareness that her time as a cheerleader is limited. “My love for the sport and knowing that one day I won’t have the opportunity to participate again kept me motivated to stay on no matter the difficulties,” Ruiz said.
Her leadership extends beyond the mat. “I like to think that each one in the team has their own unique personality that contributes to our dynamic,” Ruiz said. “My contribution is beyond the mat. It is being there to support my team and having open communication whenever needed.”
A key moment for Ruiz this season was overcoming a challenge she faced last year. “Last year I struggled with a one-man stunt and took a pretty bad fall. This year I got over my fear and hit the move,” says Ruiz, describing her proudest moment.
Reflecting on her recognition, Ruiz expresses gratitude for the honor. “I’m really grateful and honored to be named Athlete of the Month,” Ruiz said. “It was a big surprise, and I’m thankful for everyone who has supported me along the way.”
