As the boys soccer off season games approach, new head coach, Isidro Guadalupe, has many expectations and goals for the new year.
“I want them to find a college and figure out what they want to do after highschool” said Coach Guadalupe. “They’re very disciplined with themselves. They listen to what I have to say and respond well.”
Many of the soccer boys believe this soccer season will be a good one, thanks to the new coach. “I think he’s making us improve all around so when the season comes, we [can] give it our all. I think he [can] definitely lead us to gain division champs.” Alejandro De la Torre, senior, said.
Guadalupe keeps the same expectations for all players. He doesn’t treat one differently than the other because of his “no tolerance” teaching. This helps the players learn to take responsibility for their actions and accept the consequences.
Athletes have different reasons to love a sport. For some, it creates discipline and allows a much healthier way to relieve stress. “When I was a little, I was a troublesome kid. Once I got into soccer, I calmed down. It made me a better person in and out the field,” Luis Salazar, senior, said.
While some of these soccer players find discipline and as a challenge, others find much comfort and peace.
“Soccer gives me a clear path with what I want to do with my life. [It definitely helps] me when things have been confusing or difficult, I can turn to soccer,” Melvin Cruz, junior, said.
“Soccer influences my life because it betters my physical and mental health. It has always been in my life.” Kevin Hernandez, sophomore, said.
The biggest goal for all these players is to learn teamwork.Soccer has created a strong bond between these team members. “Being captain for these guys, and having their trust is a big honor for me,” said Salazar.
