Girl’s soccer season is coming up in the winter, and over forty girls are joining, and here’s what to expect and more. With many girls joining this year, also comes the thought of changes and expectations both as a student and athletes wise. One of the coaches of the girl’s soccer team, Luis Cortez, will push the team by pursuing their growth and their passion for soccer.
Discussing the bigger team the coaches have this year, Cortez and Cerda, they hope to improve girls’ skills, along with their development on and off the field. The coaches have said there will be no changes in their coaching methods. Though there have been some additions regarding their values. Although the team has grown significantly as a result of more freshmen and sophomores joining, their goals for this team have not changed but have instead increased. They hope to sustain a fun and positive, hard-working environment for the team.
However, the coaches are expecting newer players and returners alike to follow the same “philosophy” and give everyone an opportunity in girl’s soccer. That philosophy follows the pyramid of success and,”…show the core values and traits that we want them to demonstrate,” Cortez said.
The pyramid of success depicts girls ‘ traits and characteristics that they wish to embody in every player on the team. At the base of this pyramid, there are team-building traits; team spirit, fun, friendship, and cooperation. On the second row are hard work, and respect, above that are the traits of confidence and determination. Whilst at the top of this pyramid is competitive greatness. The pyramid is read from bottom to top as the most important characteristics and morals are representing the base of the team.
Regarding school and work ethics,” We want girls to be responsible, we want girls to be dedicated, hard workers, and (have) accountability…,” Cortez said. With this, he goes on to talk about wanting each player to carry out the traits that they see as necessary for being on the team.
Leading into the girls being in season soon, there came many intriguing thoughts and concerns about the coaching in a team as big as theirs. Heading onto the field, “First we want the girls to come out here, have fun, try as hard as they can. And obviously, be as competitive as they can,” Cortez said.
This year with the girl’s soccer season starting and an increase in teammates, the coaches hope to encourage players to show their best traits and qualities both on and off the field. Therefore, embodying being a student before an athlete. Coach Cortez hopes that the girls try their best on and off the field while also gaining a fun experience throughout this season filled with newcomers.
