As this year comes to an end, graduating seniors have one semester left until they receive their diplomas. Many seniors have been submitting their college applications while working to finish this semester strong. One student has received recognition from peers and teachers throughout the school.
Brianna Penaloza is part of the 2024 graduating class. She has participated in advanced band and has been vice president of the Interact club for the past four years. Throughout these years, Penaloza has shown leadership, while maintaining a positive attitude as she continues to improve herself every day.
In a musical aspect, she has been given the responsibility of taking charge as a board member of the music department and clarinet section leader. “She is responsible for meetings, ensuring that everyone has their music and that they know how to play their part,” Ms. Rincon, one of the music teachers, said. Penaloza also takes time after school to tutor 7th-grade or beginner high school students who are struggling to play the clarinet.
“Learning and playing music isn’t easy at first because there is a full commitment to learning how to play,” Penaloza said. There have been occasions when she has been put in the spotlight. Despite the pressure, she has put in the work, time, and effort and has seen results for herself and others as well. “I think Brianna has a really great attitude overall. She’s always ready to go and it doesn’t necessarily matter what’s going on,” Rincon said.
Apart from the responsibilities given to her in the music department, she has also had to manage the Interact club and take charge on different occasions. “As an officer, she helps organize events that they participate in…because she’s vice president she also presides over meetings if the president is not there,” Mr. Cottom, the Interact club advisor said. Penaloza has been able to help those around her since she has shown her dedication to helping her community. She always contributes her time and attends events whenever possible.
Not only has she contributed with her time, but she always finds ways to change her leadership style to assist her club and peers. “She is a role model to other students…and she looks for ways she could improve herself to help other students,” Cottom said.
Penaloza has taken the initiative to leave a significant impact on other students after she graduates. “I would love to leave communication through my leadership…as it’s easier for others to communicate and have the confidence to participate,” Penaloza said.
