Being a teen is an overwhelming time. As students are growing in their bodies, they are also expected to balance sports, clubs, and advanced courses which result in little to no time for students mentally or physically.
Fortunately, there is a newfound club known as the self-care club advised by Ms. Gallego, and president Haifa Hamdan, a senior. “The club’s purpose is to increase student knowledge of the importance of skin, as well as taking care of yourself whether it might be mental, physical or emotional,” Hamdan said.
The self-care club holds meetings bi-weekly on Mondays at 3:45p.m. Hamdan has put in her best efforts to change the topic every other week. Whether it is through credible websites, her own slideshows, or quizzes, her passion does shine through. “One time we talked about the importance of sunscreen, one time we talked about makeup going bad like expiration dates,” Hamdan said.
The club is often misunderstood to only be a makeup club. However, it cannot be stressed enough by Ms.Gallego and Hamdan that it covers all aspects of self love including the fact that it’s open to all grades sixth through twelfth. With the club starting close to a month ago at MACES it has shown success as Ms.G said, “every meeting we have 20 or so students,” almost a full class size.
Although the numbers look good, ambitious Hamdan does not want to stop there, “I’m planning on expanding it with field trips, possible fundraisers, more bonding events, etc…” she exclaimed . The self-care club and taking care of themselves goes beyond the hallmark and general thing most people say it is. Like Ms. Gallego said, “It’s a science thing,” Student’s don’t realize how much help they need until he hit rock bottom, and that simply can not be allowed.
Overall, with the new founding of this club people are on the road to fostering a different school culture that revolves around proactivity to keep themselves balanced. “We’re not only nourishing and protecting our skin but we are also boosting our self-confidence,” Hamdan said.
