(Q) Can you tell us about strategies you will use to ensure all voices, including our underrepresented groups are heard and valued in your decision-making process?
(A) Well, when it comes to reaching out and asking students for their opinion we make it really easy to make sure [their] voice is heard. A google form is always sent out asking for ideas, if they liked or disliked anything we did for a specific event. Yes, some students may not answer it but for the ones who do, the leadership class and myself look over it and reflect to try to improve the next event so more students may want to participate or even just go to show their support.
(Q) How are you planning to balance traditions and innovation when planning events and activities this year?
(A) Traditions are an important part of establishing school spirit because it gives the students something to look forward to year after year. So, we try to continue those as much as we can. [Although], with different students comes different ideas and that’s the part where we try to include new fun activities.
(Q) What are some of the ways you will collaborate with other student clubs to create a more unified and supportive school community?
(A) Something I plan to do to collaborate with other student clubs is try to promote each club as much as possible so it reaches every student. I will also show my support with leadership by offering help if [needed] from the whole leadership class and myself. One of the pros of our school being somewhat small is that you can’t really miss what is going on. So, I plan to attend as much student ran activities as I can. Not only for me to support them, but to show the rest of the school that even [though] you may not like a certain club, it can be okay to get outside your comfort zone.
(Q) How can you use your leadership skills to solve this years challenges?
(A) That’s a great question. From being a captain in football to now being a part of ASB can be a lot to take in. I mostly just had to worry about getting my guys ready for games and making sure they’re doing their part. So, I think implementing that into leadership isn’t that different. [Although], I also believe I alone can’t solve the challenges we face this year, but with my board and the whole leadership class we can take down anything that comes our way. Being a part of leadership [is] always a challenge [when it comes to] trying to come up with ideas that the whole school will like. They’re always gonna be those few students who refuse to participate. The only thing we can really do to eliminate that is come up with events that bring interest from every grade.
