November 5 marks the start of the presidential election, the cornerstone of American democracy for 235 years and 46 presidencies. MACES students are actively participating in this democratic process as Student Election Workers through the Los Angeles Student Election Worker Program. This initiative allows high school students to serve at polling places across LA County, the largest voting jurisdiction in the nation.
Student Election Workers have crucial responsibilities, including assisting voters, opening and closing polling places, and ensuring smooth operations throughout the day. To prepare for these duties, students complete a three-hour online training followed by three hours of in-person training.
The application process for this program began on August 26, with student assignments starting today, just days before the elections. Senior Osmin Guerrero emphasized the importance of these roles in promoting civic engagement. “Helping voters and learning about the electoral process firsthand is invaluable,” Guerrero stated.
He acknowledged the challenges many face in navigating ballots and understanding complex propositions. “Students can help bridge that gap, ensuring their peers feel informed and empowered to vote,” he added.
With the critical nature of being informed about candidates and propositions, Guerrero noted, “Our votes represent our decisions… It is essential for democracy to protect everyone’s interests.”
The Student Election Worker program provides a valuable opportunity for students to engage with their community and encourage civic participation. As November 5 approaches, voters are encouraged to cast their ballots with the assistance of these dedicated student workers.
