This season for the boys’ Wolfpack volleyball team has been a rollercoaster of emotions. From multiple four-game winning streaks to an eight-game losing streak late into the season, it led to a championship appearance.
The Wolfpack’s record of eight wins and two losses in the league was their best in Maces history. This was their best season since their last championship run 2 years ago, in which they lost by a score of 3-2 to Elizabeth High School. That season, they won eleven games while losing ten, while also having five wins and five losses in league play.
The Wolfpack rallied from being a seventh seed, including an upset of the #2-seeded Gardena. Playing against East Valley in the championship, the Wolfpack lost by a score of 3-0. “[This playoff run] was an extremely fun and new experience with my team, especially since most of them were seniors I grew up with and got close to over the years. My favorite memory was beating San Fernando in the semi-finals to head to the championship game. Being down 2-1 in the fourth set, playing with each other as a team helped us overcome this deficit. This was special since it was most of our final season, our prom week, and our last home game.” Senior Matthew Cortez said.
Prior to their playoff run, junior Kevin Hernandez was brought up for some extra help to fuel them in their next games. After spending a majority of the season on JV, Hernandez felt the pressure of playing with varsity was different from that of JV. “At first, I wasn’t expecting to get brought up, but I was confident in my skills and knew I was a good player. During playoff games, it’s entirely different from any regular season game since there’s more pressure on your shoulders from fans, teammates, and your coaches. Learning not to get in my own head over every little mistake helped me to improve myself and grow as a player as well as with my teammates,” Hernandez said.
Although the Wolfpack came up short, this season was one to remember. For the seniors, this was a great way to end their career in a championship run, while for the underclassmen, it’s only the start of many more potential playoff runs.
