Melissa Ponce, Editor in Chief of Design

Melissa Ponce is a senior and the Editor in Chief of Design for the Wolfpack Times. This is her second year participating in the school newspaper and she is eager to write stories that will keep the school community connected despite distance learning.

In addition to writing for the school newspaper, she has also created illustrations for the front cover and designed page layouts using Adobe InDesign. As EIC of Design, she looks forward to collaborating with fellow editors to ensure WolfpackTimes.net is consistent with its layout and is visually appealing. She is also a Los Angeles Times High School Insider writer. Through this program, she has published writing on a platform that is geared towards students and run by students. By attending a student journalism conference last fall, she learned from professionals in the field about various journalism fundamentals. One highlight she has from her experience in journalism is interviewing with a Los Angeles Times reporter for a story published on the front cover of the LA Times newspaper.

Outside of the classroom, Melissa enjoys volunteering with her school’s Interact Club, where she participates in various local projects within the community. Furthermore, she loves to bake, run, and drink boba. In the future, she hopes to study public health and work towards a career that provides health resources to people in underrepresented communities. Feel free to contact her at [email protected].

A PASSION FOR READING- A new student-run club, Becoming Bookworms, organized by six MACES students plans to provide access to free books to those in low-income communities. Their passion stems from their hope to expand educational opportunities despite socio-economic status. “Knowledge opens so many doors and what better way to learn than by reading a great book?” Jamie Cardona, a Becoming Bookworm member, said.

Due to the coronavirus, back to school for students is unlike any year before. As a result, students have switched to online learning, which is paired with a new set of barriers and technical difficulties. “I have a lot of [technical] difficulties when it comes to online learning...I’ve been kicked out of Zoom calls before,” Abril Zuniga, a junior, said.
