After weeks of competition, the MACES boys’ golf team came out on top, earning the league championship through teamwork, consistency, and determination. According to Coach Nunez, while experienced players started the season with a strong start, the newest additions impressed him a lot. Those who have never played before and worked on their swing ended up being as good as the veteran players of the team.
Coach Nunez said, “This year’s success came down to practice and consistency. Each player had to improve their own part of the game. But lastly, having confidence in one another played an important role in winning.”
When asked about the success that they saw this year as both a team and the relationships made, Aren Campos, senior, said, “I honestly believe it was the time that we practiced before and after school. That time helped us develop better skills that we specifically needed to improve on for us to win each match. The end result was everything we could’ve asked for: being league champions for the first time in MACES boys golf history.”
The team’s strong work ethic and positive mindset not only helped them improve their skills but also strengthened the bond they shared throughout the season. Joseph Garcia, a sophomore, reflected on how the team stayed grounded throughout the season, saying, “The team supported each other by reminding each other that we just needed to have fun and play.”
With teammates encouraging each other through mistakes and pressure, players such as Argeniz Orozco explained what he helped the team succeed this year, “Without a shadow of a doubt, Nunez’s amazing coaching, with a lot of our team being someone new to golf, it’s amazing that we were able to pull in this win and it just goes to show how much hard work and consistency can help”.
While relying on each other played an important part in the season. Team chemistry was something that brought the team closer together. Junior Carlos Aguilar described the team’s comfort with each other: “We all felt comfortable being around each other and bringing each other up on the way to or from matches, we would all be dying from laughter.”
As the final results were announced, players described the moment as emotional and hard to believe after weeks of competition leading up to the championship. Senior Xavier Guerrero said, “A specific match that stood out to me was the match to be able to see if we were eligible for the one-hole playoff round because it was just insane, we beat every single top team in the league, and it was perfect for us to have a chance to be league champs, and it happened.”
Although the seniors know they will not be with the team next year, they believe the underclassmen can continue the program’s success. “A message I would like to share with the team is to keep going and bring another league win to golf,” Castaneda, a senior, said. As the season comes to a close, the team leaves behind not only a league championship title, but also a strong foundation for future MaCES boys golf teams to build on. With returning players gaining experience and confidence throughout the season, the program hopes to continue its winning culture in the years ahead.
