Staff Editorial: Press Members Post Feelings of the 2020 Presidential Election
MIXED ELECTION FEELINGS- The data recorded from Wolfpack Times reporters shows that 50 percent have positive feelings about the election results. On the other hand, the other 50% of reporters have neutral feelings about the election results. “I’m glad about the results, although I don’t agree with some things Biden says I feel out of the two options he was the least worse,” Leslie Chang, reporter, said.

As the day of the 2020 presidential election drew closer, the nerves of many only worsened. The thought of having Donald J. Trump and Joseph Biden as presidential candidates racing for the victory of the United States was not something a lot of Americans enjoyed to watch. The year 2020 marks the four-year term of Trump being in office, which to some citizens has felt like centuries, others a light breeze.

Trump in office has affected many people, especially minorities. He began his presidential career by falsely labeling Mexicans as drug dealers and rapists. “When Mexico is sending its people, they’re not sending their best… They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists, and some, I assume are good people,” Trump said during his 2015 campaign, according to CNN.com. From the very beginning, he was offensive towards the Hispanic and Latino communities which didn’t sit right with the members of these communities.
Running against Trump was Biden, vice-president to president Barack Obama. Seeing that Trump was running against Biden was a stress reliever for many. Biden is known for many things such as expanding healthcare with Obamacare and expanding women’s rights and gender equity, which Trump’s campaign is against. “Trump’s campaign is against LGBTQ+ marriage and a women’s right to an abortion; these morals hold religious stands, which has even convinced some of my family members to vote for him due to the fact that their religion agrees with these morals,” Kate De La Torre, Broadcast Editor for the Wolfpack Times, said.

Many disagree with Trump’s decisions, and many US voters voted for Biden just to get Trump out of office. This was the reason for many voters because they are tired of Trump’s actions including the measures he has and hasn’t taken during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It has been repeatedly shown that he has missed the mark when it comes to addressing the most pressing issues in the United States from social inequality to the coronavirus pandemic,” Melissa Ponce, Editor in Chief of Design for the Wolfpack Times, said.
One of the promises that were made was that if he won, he was going to take sufficient matters to make COVID-19 cases go down. This promise is something he will be held accountable for. “I really hope Biden stays true to his word, though; we need to tackle COVID-19, raise the minimum wage, start taking climate change seriously, and put an end to social injustices in this country,” Daniella Hernandez, Editor in Chief of Content for the Wolfpack Times, said.
Biden winning the presidential election gave hope not only to those who voted for him but for the upcoming generations as well. Gen-Z was a big group who promoted the elections, specifically through social media platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. As the upcoming generation, many hope for great things to occur for the United States with a new president in office. “Now, I feel hopeful that we will become more progressive as a country and that my grandchildren will have a good world to live in,” Destiny Juarez, Reporter for the Wolfpack Times, said.
