After starting off the season with zero wins and four losses, the varsity baseball team finished the season 16-5 on their way to the semi-finals. This was their best record since the 2022 season, when the Wolfpack had a record of fourteen wins and seven losses. On their way to the semi-finals, the Wolfpack beat Fremont in the second round and Monroe High School in the quarterfinals. In the first round of the 2024 playoffs, Monroe had beaten MACES by a score of 7-6.
Playing against Chavez High School in the Semi-Final round of playoffs, the Wolfpack lost by a score of seven to four. In semi-final games, the Wolfpack are 1-4. Their only championship appearance occurred in 2019 and ended in a 6-5 loss against Vaughn High School. “I don’t know why we can’t get over the hump and win a CIF City Championship! In the 2019 championship, a player on Vaughn dropped a flyball, and his teammate dove in and caught it to win the game with the tying run on 3rd base. In 2021, we had a 2-run lead in the bottom of the 7th inning, but we had several errors and miscues to allow Wilson to come back and win. In 2022, we had so many errors and miscues again to give the game away to Legacy. In 2025, our best pitcher got hurt, was not at his best, and we did not hit with runners in scoring position. We have had so many good baseball players, but we always run into bad luck and the pressure seems too much for the players in the semi-finals and finals!” Coach Benavidez said
Going into next season, the players on the team are finding any way to get better. During the season, junior Octavio Ramirez struggled with consistent playing time. Heading into the offseason, he is finding any way to improve. “I hope to improve my fielding and pitching next year because the extra depth will help us get further [in the playoffs]. I will work to fix this to have the same drastic improvement I had with my hitting this year,” Ramirez said.
Freshman Jorge Viramontes juggled playing with both varsity and JV throughout the season. Viramontes was always open to advice during the season, but also realized how much he needed to work on to land a more consistent role on the team. “I loved playing with Varsity this past season and learning from my older teammates. I realized how much I have to work on during this off-season to be stronger for the upcoming season. I’m looking forward to playing varsity next season and contributing to winning a title,” Viramontes said.
With most of the roster returning for the 2026 season, expectations are high for a similar playoff run as this last season. “Next season, I’m hungry to build on the momentum I’ve gained and make a deeper impact on the team, whether this be from starting games or coming off the bench. Playing with my teammates was an absolute blast! From the goofy celebrations to the ridiculous team chants, every moment was pure gold. We were a band of brothers united by our love for the game.” Freshman Damian Zazueta said.
