The use of AI in MACES isn’t a secret. Students and staff members throughout the school have used AI for their notes, homework, grading, etc. However, the topic about artificial intelligence is widely debated; focusing on if it brings out the most and restrains people from their ability to think and write.
A significant factor to this problem is that the use of AI has negatively affected students ability to be creative or feel motivated. Students use AI to write their essays, finish homework, write notes, etc. As students continue to use AI, they feel less motivated to do their work, because they rely on Chat-GPT, Google Gemini or other AI alternatives. According to Education Week, “Seventy percent of teachers worry that AI weakens critical thinking and research skills, according to the report. It draws from nationally representative surveys of public school teachers in grades 6-12, parents of students in grades 6-12…”
As a result, it follows that AI is constantly being used as a crutch rather than a tool as students tend to lean on the tool for anything that they can use it on; school essays, notes, responses and more. Simple and challenging tasks that promote student productivity are simply put into a generative chatbot that spits out the same information to every user. They are slowly becoming more dependent on technology to do their assignments and write their essays.
A different perspective emerges when the use of AI is used in an effective way. Artificial intelligence has become a common tool that students use for school work. Many students use AI to brainstorm ideas, making assignments more easier and less overwhelming. From summarizing notes to giving start up ideas, they not only enhance the possibility of students’ work but they certainly make use of the time. According to URBE University, AI “…can tailor learning materials and activities to meet the individual needs of each student.” This shows when AI is being used as a helpful tool, it can grant many benefits to not only students but to staff, parents, administrators, and more.
Ultimately, the takeaway is that AI is beneficial to everyone to a certain extent. Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that should be used for assistance in work, not as an overdependent machine that should do all the thinking.
